I went to Best Buy on 86st to buy a new laptop on 3.5.2025 around 11am, it was pouring rain and the store was empty..
I first met with Theo, he was extremely rude towards me. Treating me like a "dumb" woman and a 2nd class citizen! He made me feel like I was not welcome and he did not want to help me purchase a new device.
I am not sure if it because, I am a Black Woman or if it was because I have an accent, or he thought I have no money and I was wasting his time. But, my encounter with him was horrible and demeaning. Obviously, I am not American, but, that does not give Theo the right to treat me like a 2nd class citizen!
First, he did not know how to get the specifics on my laptop(I brought my laptop with me). Then, he had the audacity to tell me to go to Geeksquad so, they can find out how to open the specifications on my laptop! I declined, and told him he can call someone to help him which made him mad!
My laptop was in the thousand of dollars when I bought it in 2023. When he finally found out what type of laptop I have,Theo kept showing me laptops around $250, $450, $500 and one for $999. I kept telling him to please show me higher-end and better quality, which made him mad again!!!!!
After over 15mns of that back and fourth with him, I finally asked him to please show me the Microsoft laptops similar to mine. He brought me to the Microsoft stand and left me there without showing me anything!!!! After waiting for over 5mns alone, I asked for a supervisor who was very understanding and referred me to ANJAL.
ANJAL was extremely knowledgeable, understanding, professional and kind. From just a quick look at my laptop, Anjal knew exactly what type of laptop I needed. Light weight, compact and extremely fast.
I opted for the Best Microsoft Surface 13.18, Gen7 32GB and within 15mns, I bought my new laptop.
And this is not the first time, I am being treated poorly on 86st, I always ignore it.
Depending on who you are some staff members are very nice to "white" people, greeting them with a big smile, helping them etc.... And for the "rest" of us, We are not being greeted, we are being ignored and we are sadly invisible.
Even though, I live around 86St, I usually go to the Best Buy on 18th St on 6th because they are much nicer to everyone!

It was 12 degrees so I stopped in to walk around and warm up. Staff were helpful but not aggressive selling and I ended up finding a nice deal on a switch game. I stop in whenever I'm working in the area now.
