I was persuaded in store to open a Best Buy Citibank credit card after being assured I would receive $275 in reward certificates that could be applied immediately toward a MacBook compatible USB. I did not want or need a credit card and had the cash to pay, but I relied on the representations made by the sales associate. The reward certificates were emailed to me but would not apply at checkout, rendering them effectively useless. I paid the card in full and canceled it, only to later discover a service charge had been added after cancellation. I then spent nearly an hour on the phone with a Citibank representative who assured me the issue was resolved and that a refund would be issued. Despite this, I received a call today stating the account was past due and that a late fee exceeding $30 had been added. While Citibank agreed to waive the late fee, I was told I would need to contact Best Buy separately to resolve the remaining balance. This entire experience has been unnecessarily stressful, time consuming, and misleading. The sales practices were dishonest, the reward certificates did not work as promised, and the billing errors continued even after cancellation. I have impeccable credit and should never have been placed in this situation. I strongly caution others against opening a credit card through Best Buy and its association with Citibank. This experience felt deceptive, unprofessional, and entirely avoidable.
